W5JA

I am faculty sponsor of the Oklahoma University Amateur Radio Club (OUARC), also known as the Alpha Sigma Delta Radio Fraternity and trustee of club call W5TC. I am also a member of the South Canadian Amateur Radio Society (SCARS). I am also an (now occasional) ARRL Volunteer Examiner (testing information).

About My Callsign...

Formerly KC5RI, I was a grand-prize winner (well, I got my first choice!) in the Callsign Sweepstakes (a.k.a. Vanity Callsign Program). I had become KC5RI when I moved to Oklahoma from New York (where I was in graduate school at Cornell) in 1979. At that time, you had to get a new call, from your new callsign region, when you moved, so I couldn't keep WB2HXX, or earlier calls WA8VEM or WN8QPJ from my youth in Ohio, for that matter. First licensed in 1965, I guess I have to admit that I really am an old timer! The W5JA call was a kind of reward to myself for upgrading to Amateur Extra a few years ago.  Here's the Silent Key who was the previous holder of W5JA, and his XYL.  This was sent to me by a friend of his:
