I. General References

Continuum Mechanics, General

  • Fung, Y. C., A First Course in Continuum Mechanics. Good, basic book on continuum mechanics. Not much on specific topics of elasticity, fluid mechanics, etc.
  • Jeffreys, H., Cartesian Tensors. Small paperback, good if you're really into tensors (and who isn't?).
  • Block, H. D., Tensor Analysis. Similar to Jeffreys' book.
  • Jaeger, Elasticity, Fracture and Flow. Excellent basic description of these processes.
  • Jaeger and Cook, Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics. Obviously an "applied" book.
  • Sommerfeld, Mechanics of Deformable Bodies. Relatively cheap, readable paperback.
  • Ranalli, Rheology of the Earth.

Elasticity

  • Love, A. E. H., A Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity. A classic. It was $5 when I bought it (which tells you something); it is still a bargain. (A Dover paperback.)
  • Landau and Lifshitz, Theory of Elasticity. The L&L series is very rigorous (i.e., it will knock your socks off!)
  • Timoshenko -- author and coauthor of several engineering-type elasticity books, including a couple on plates and shells.

Plasticity

  • Kachanov, L. M., Fundamentals of the Theory of Plasticity.
  • Prager and Hodge, Theory of Perfectly Plastic Solids.

Viscoelasticity

  • Christensen, R. M., Theory of Viscoelasticity. Advanced book -- gives little physical insight.
  • Flugge, Viscoelasticity (?) Better introduction to viscoelasticity than above.

Heat Conduction:

  • Carslaw and Jaeger, Conduction of Heat in Solids. Virtually all you might want to know about classical heat conduction theory and methods of solving the heat-conduction equation. Still the standard reference text for heat-conduction problems.
